Mydreamalive.com presents the Iconic Leontyne Price

What does it take to change the face of African-American culture?

A person that believes in what they believe and does not care what anyone else thinks!

One of her favorite quotes:

Accomplishment has no color

                                                         Leontyne Price

What an amazing person, performer, and voice like no nother.

Born in Laurel, Mississippi on February 10, 1927, Leontyne price grew up with  the love of music stirring inside of her veins. Like most African-American children, Leontyne got her music chops and internship in church, growing up listening to the type of music that could stir a soul. She new right then and there that she was going to make music, and affecting people’s lives, her  profession.

Now here is where the story gets interesting.

She chose to pursue a career in Classical/Operatic music and not jazz or gospel music!

huh??

This is where the disconnect happened for many of good ole down home black folks.

She went to Central State College in Wilberforce, Ohio and got encouragement and inspiration to further her love for the genre.  Leontyne went to college to become a music teacher. While hearing her sing one day in a Hall, the President of the College, Dr. Charles H. Wesley encouraged her to change her major from education to voice.

Leontyne Price earned her B.A. in June 1948, and headed to New York to study at the Julliard School of Music where she had won a full tuition scholarship. At Julliard, she received voice training from Florence Ward Kimball, a distinguished teacher, and, in her last year, she gave a strong performance as Mistress Ford in the student production of the opera, Falstaff. Upon seeing her in this production, Virgil Thompson immediately invited her to star in a revival of his opera, Four Saints in Three Acts, which ran on Broadway for three weeks in April 1952. Less than two months later, Price made her debut in Dallas, in a role that would carve her name in the minds of audiences everywhere; she appeared as Bess in a revival of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.

Leontyne Price achieved one of the greatest artistic victories of her career on January 27, 1961, when she debuted at the Metropolitan Opera as Leonora in Verdi’s Il Trovatore. This performance ignited a 42-minute ovation, one of the longest in the Met’s history. Critic Harold Schoenberg wrote: “Her voice was dusky and rich in its lower tones, perfectly even in its transitions from one register to another, and flawlessly pure and velvety at the top.”

Over the years, Leontyne Price has won 15 Grammy Awards for vocal recordings she has made, and she has been on the cover of Time and 27 other magazines. In addition, she was the only opera singer to be represented in the list of “Remarkable American Women: 1776-1976″ in Life Magazine‘s Bicentennial issue in 1976. She now lives quietly in a cozy house in New York’s Greenwich Village.

Even with her amazing popularity in Europe, her status as an African-American Icon has yet to be truly celebrated!

There is more than enough evidence, rewards, reasons, and accolades to make this happen today!

Derrick Butler is CEO and Founder of Mydreamalive.com which has a mission of changing the negative images that media portrays as African-American heroes, to positive images that are true African-American Icons.

Today I Inspire to see Barack Obama get the keys to the White House!!

President Bush will go down as the absolute worst president ever!

President Nixon who has been dead since 1994 can finally rest in peace.

Bush stole the election in Florida and it came down to one state because of

the FEAR tactics that the Republican Party used. Al Gore was the peoples

President, clearly winning the poplular vote. America was reintroduce to the

Electorial college in that election and it showed just what a joke the

Electorial college is. Why shold it come down to middle america? I am

not saying it should be dominated by the big states either. If the big

states were the way to the Big House, then the little states woud be ignored.

Well here comes Barack Obama, a constitutional Harvard Lawyer that knows

how to play the game the way it was meant to be played. They will probably

find a way to change the rulesafter they lose the Pres election.

Bush and his croonies have almst Bancrupt the nation, with the gas prices,

tax welfare for the rich, and going to war with a country that did not attack

us on 9/11.  America is sick and tired of the lies and games that these sick

tyrants play. Americans will show just how sick we are when the vote comes

through today for Barack Obama. They will not be able to steal this one. He

has big money on his side.

So Bush needs to put an ad on Craigslist.org and start looking for movers.

I am sure C. Rice will be ther to hep him!

Oh.. and please hurray up.. Mchele needs to get the last of the

Middle Class Tax Share Set to Rise
Studies Say Burden Of Rich to Decline
by Dana Milbank and Jonathan Weisman

Three successive tax cuts pushed by President Bush will leave middle-income taxpayers paying a greater share of all federal taxes by the end of the decade, according to new analyses of the Bush administration’s tax policies.
As critics of the tax cuts in 2001, 2002 and 2003 have noted, the very wealthiest Americans — those earning $337,000 or more per year — will be the greatest beneficiaries of the changes in the nation’s tax laws. And, as administration officials have argued, low-income taxpayers will also enjoy a disproportionately lighter tax burden.

Conservatives and liberals alike agree that Bush’s tax policies have shifted more of the tax burden to the middle class.

The result is that a broad swath of lower-middle, middle- and upper-middle-income people, as well as some rich Americans, will carry a greater share of the federal tax burden after the laws passed in the past three years are fully implemented. While taxes are scheduled to decline for all income groups, those earning more than $28,000 but less than $337,000 will end up paying a greater share of the taxes than they did before the changes.

The findings, by two groups that have been critical of the Bush administration’s tax policies, add a new wrinkle to the increasingly contentious debate over the fairness of Bush’s tax policies and which income groups would benefit most.

Liberal groups have argued that the Bush administration is penalizing the poor while rewarding the rich. In part to answer those critics, Republicans have targeted the poor with expanded tax refund checks for families with children, a new 10 percent tax bracket and a larger earned-income credit for married couples who are poor.

The result may be a surprise to both sides: By the end of the decade, the middle class will be picking up a greater share of the government’s tab.

“It’s hard to get a lot of progressivity at the very top,” said R. Glenn Hubbard, the architect of Bush’s most recent tax cut proposal and a former chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. By slashing taxes on dividends, capital gains and inheritances, the cuts ensure that tax burdens will no longer rise consistently with income, as they would with a perfectly “progressive” system. “But,” Hubbard added, “we’ve very much retained progressivity overall because so much money was dumped into the bottom rates.”

The two studies focused on separate issues. Citizens for Tax Justice examined the percentage changes in total federal taxes that would be paid by different income groups through 2010. The Tax Policy Center, jointly run by the Brookings Institution and the Urban Institute, looked at the share of federal taxes that would remain for the various groups once those changes are fully phased in. But the studies reached similar conclusions.

Citizens for Tax Justice found that for the lowest fifth of taxpayers — those earning below $16,000 — federal taxes would fall 10 percent between now and 2010, while federal taxes for those in the second quintile — earning between $16,000 to $28,000 — would fall 12 percent. At the other end of the scale, the decline for the top 1 percent of taxpayers — those making $337,000 and up — would be 15 percent.

In contrast, for taxpayers earning between $45,000 and $337,000, the decline would be 7 percent, less than half the cut reaped by the very wealthy.

Citizens for Tax Justice assumed that those provisions in the tax laws scheduled to expire before 2011 would expire as scheduled, although administration officials have said they are determined to make those changes permanent.

The Tax Policy Center assumed that all proposed tax cuts would become permanent. It found that the share of federal taxes paid by the top 1 percent of taxpayers would drop to 22.8 percent of the total in 2011, from 24.3 percent today, while the share paid by the lowest 40 percent would fall to 2 percent, from 2.2 percent.

All others would have a slightly larger proportion of the federal tax burden in 2011 than they do today. For families earning between $22,955 and $80,903, their share of federal taxes would rise from 25.5 percent to 26.1 percent.

Both groups included all federal income, payroll, corporate and estate taxes; Citizens for Tax Justice also included excise taxes.

Treasury Department officials said the studies are skewed because they include Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes, which the tax cuts did not seek to reduce. Pamela F. Olson, the assistant Treasury secretary for tax policy, said that if Social Security taxes are included, then Social Security benefits should also be measured. “Then you would have a very progressive system,” she said.

Instead, Olson pointed to the Treasury’s analysis of the impact of successive tax cuts on individual income taxes only. In that analysis, all taxpayers with less than $100,000 in income are shown to be paying a smaller percentage of their income in taxes than they did before Bush took office. Households earning $100,000 or more are now paying 73.3 percent of federal income taxes, up from 70 percent.

Figuring out whether tax policy benefits the wealthy or the poor is a hotly disputed subject. Liberals favor a progressive tax system in which households pay higher tax rates and a higher share of their total income as they climb up the income ladder. By that measure, the Bush tax cuts have made the tax code less progressive. By 2011, the poorest taxpayers’ after-tax income will have risen only 0.3 percent, according to the Tax Policy Center, while household income for the richest 1 percent of taxpayers will have jumped 8.6 percent.

Conservatives say the better measure is which group winds up paying a greater proportion of the tax burden after the tax cut. The rich may get the largest dollar benefit from the tax cuts, but the top 20 percent of households will still be paying 71.5 percent of all federal taxes in 2011.

Conservatives and liberals alike agree that Bush’s tax policies have shifted more of the tax burden to the middle class. Kevin Hassett, a conservative economist with the American Enterprise Institute, said it “makes complete sense” that this would happen as a result of Bush’s policies.

Changes such as the elimination of the estate tax and the reduction of the stock-dividend tax disproportionately benefit the wealthiest 1 percent, who have the largest amount of assets and capital. Those at the other end of the income spectrum benefit disproportionately from targeted tax cuts such as the child tax credit.

With the biggest gains going to the wealthiest and to low-income taxpayers, those in the middle inevitably get a higher tax burden because they don’t qualify for the targeted tax breaks that go to the poor or the investment-related tax breaks that go to the wealthy. “The middle class is predominantly labor income,” Hassett said.

Barack Obama & MLK have so much in common.
MLK was looking at our Social equality the ability to eat at the same table, go to the same schools and vote at the same Voting booth.
Barack Obama is focused on our Economic equality, being able to earn a descent living, save and move our families to the next economic level.
The last 8 years the gap between the rich and the middle class has grown at an alarming rate. We have  taken a step back.
Now with Barack Obama so close to victory, one can only hope & pray that we have enough courage to cross the finish line.

The Start of Reagonomics and Free Market Deregulation

Creator of Free Market Economics
Creator of Free Market Economics

Milton Friedman

(July 31, 1912 – November 16, 2006) was an American Nobel Laureate economist and public intellectual. He is best known among scholars for his theoretical and empirical research, especially consumption analysis, monetary history and theory, and for his demonstration of the complexity of stabilization policy.[1] A global public followed his restatement of a libertarian political philosophy that insisted on minimizing the role of government in favor of the private sector. As a leader of the Chicago School of economics, based at the University of Chicago, he had a widespread influence in shaping the research agenda of the entire profession. Friedman’s many monographs, books, scholarly articles, papers, magazine columns, television programs, videos and lectures cover a broad range of topics in microeconomics, macroeconomics, economic history, and public policy issues. The Economist hailed him as “the most influential economist of the second half of the 20th century…possibly of all of it”.[2]

His views of monetary policy, taxation, privatization and deregulation informed the policy of governments around the globe, especially the administrations of Ronald Reagan in the U.S., Brian Mulroney in Canada, Margaret Thatcher in Britain, Roger Douglas in New Zealand, and Augusto Pinochet in Chile, and (after 1989) in Eastern Europe.

Greenspan, Bush 41 and Bush 43 are economic disciples of the Trickle Down Theory of Economics!

What a disaster! This economic theory almost destroyed a country!

The rich get richer and the poor get poorer, that is the whole stance of the repubican welfare system. I can not even believe that McCain has the nerve of accuse Barack Obama of Socialism! Marxist Socialism!!

Espeically after the 750 Billion handout that McCain and Bush and all of their croonies are handing out to their pals on Wall Street!

This is the highest form of TREASON!

Taking the hard working dollors of the American workers and giving the money to the very Rich and the people that caused the disaster to happen in the first place.

This failed economic theory has never worked. Somewhere in the back of my mind, I am thinking that they may have not planned for it to work in the first place. Now that they have lined their pockets with CASH, they are taking off with the CHINA!

I think the main reason that McCain and the Republican party want to win, is that they don’t want a full investigatin of what really happened on Wall Street!

If by the help of God we are able to do a full investigation, we will find out that the true crooks that are behind this disaster planned the whole thing, and will be found guilty of their crimes.

Then finally go to jail, the place >>>>>>> WHERE THEY ALL BELONG!!! <<<<<<<<<<<<<

All of a sudden, if you do not go for what the GOP party believes is right, you are labelled a socialist, racist, terrorist

Everything about this is bad for America!!

Laura Ingram and her clan of leftist racist, have really stooped lower than 43 and his campaign against Kerry.

We are in a country where the biggest liar gets to be President of the United States!!

I have (3) daughters and I am always reminding them to tell the truth, be honest, play fair, be christian first, and two wrongs don’t make a right!

Doesn’t the GOP know that kids are watching and they are learning and you know what kids do? They repeat what they hear and see.

They don’t have the intellect to filter out the lies and to read and look for the facts. Even if the parents correct them, they still have been some type of impression.

First we are not Democrats or Republicans >>>>> WE ARE FIRST ALL AMERICANS!!!

On November 4th a President will be elected but at what cost?

Why can’t we all see that a divided America is a weak America, that is what our enemies across the ocean want from us.

What a year in sports it has been!!

LeBron James finally climbs the mountain top after 9 years of struggle and disappointment. Coming into the league and thinking he could do it, and that he didn’t need any help to accomplish it.

Then finally going to Miami where he had (2) two other All Stars to help him obtain the championship. Lebron grew up a lot in the process, and in the final game when other team mates where ready to party before it was over, he pulled them by the side and said, “Let’s win as champions.”

Andy Murray, who has an entire country watching his every move, and being the focal point of the nation for the two weeks at Wimbledon. No Brit has been in the finals since 1936!! The country hosting the event having no hometown champion to stand up for them.

Wow…I look at the two pictures above and immediately can see the difference in the two moments.

Andy looking up in the sky and Lebron jumping up and down and partying till 6 in the A.M.

Both of them under magnifying glasses, and I personal opinion is that Andy was under MORE scrutiny and

pressure than Lebron could even imagine!

But…my point..Look what faith, sacrifice, and hard work can do!!

Better yet…Philippians 4:13 sums it all for me:

“I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me”

How often we remind ourselves that Christ is the answer to any and every obstacle that we face in life.

Christ has the strength that we need, that no matter how tall, wide, or deep the obstacle is…Christ is the

answer!

Watching Andy Murray this week, I noticed with EVERY win, this picture above is the exact look he showed.

Every WIN his head and eyes all looking upward in thanks and in realization of the moment.

Andy must now face Roger Federer in the Finals of Wimbledon! But watching Andy so far, I believe he has

learned and won already!

Congratulations to both winners!

The Trayvon Martin case truly galvanized the world,  and has brought to the front line AGAIN, the whole stereotypical image of the African-American male.  The African American male sterotype is of a bunch of hoodie wearing, pants hanging, gold tooth wearing, men that walk around all day in search of the closest liquor store we can find.  Even if it is to buy skittles and not Colt 45!

Yet, there are many men that are working professionals, that dress very nicely everyday of the week, and work extremely hard to advance in their fields and achieve a certain level of success.

But when I do a random sampling of the image above to the young men on the streets, the feedback I get is..I don’t want to look like that..that man is a SELL OUT!

or..I don’t know anyone that looks like that in my community!

Wow…that really bothers me.

On one hand you have an African-American percentage that does not want to change their look, and you have another African-American percentage that would not be caught dead looking any other way.

Then you have the biased media that only reports on the percentage that does not want to change their look…and here you have the African-American stereotype that is ripe for viewing. A media that can not wait to see the next episode on the violent black man station.

Here is a great story on the Trayvon Marin story: http://mije.org/trayvon-martin-and-media-depiction-african-american-males

In this story the writer starts with:

“He’s got his hand in his waistband, and he’s a black male.”

— George Zimmerman to a 911 operator shortly before he fatally shot Trayvon Martin

Here you have George Zimmerman getting fed a steady diet of “What the African Male looks like”…

Again, Is this what the African-American Male looks like?

If the answer is yes…then why????

If the answer is no…then why is the Media portraying that we do?

Now, I am not saying that everyone should be forced to dress a certain way, or that because you dress a certain way you should be deemed suspicious looking and then get harassed or in the worst case shot!

What I am saying is, media needs to report on both sides of the story.

You can not feed the majority ( Let’s face it we are only 15%), a true image to start from.  So that there can not be one conclusion to what you are seeing.

Now.. far right you have Barack Obama..the most powerful man on the planet that is always seen in a Suit…dressing for the job he has obtained.

Now on the far left you have the average joe..on the street dressing for the job he has obtained.

Where is the middle.. Is it he is either the President of the USA, or he is not?

Is this the only main course the media is feeding?

The link came over on Facebook about Chicago Urban Prep:

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2012-03-30/news/ct-edit-uprep-20120330_1_college-readiness-high-school-graduation-college-entrance-exam-scores

where is the press on this story??

The Chicago Tribune carried the story..with very little National Attention..

Every college aspiring child of color should have heard of or read that story!

Now this should be news!!

We need accountability in the Media to tell the positive stories that change the

face of the African-American Male!

As we read these success stories, lets put the pressure on the editorial staff at

the local papers and TV stations to do the right thing!

Until we change the perception of what an African-American male looks like….

Any black male..not dressed in a suit..could be the next Trayvon Martin!!
